Position Description: Chief Technology Officer, BigIron

Oppty_BigIron CTO The Chief Technology Officer will be critical to BigIron’s software development, driving the organization’s expansion into new verticals and horizontals as well as the streamlining of operations within the existing business. The Chief Technology Officer will play a key role in expanding and improving the platform—optimizing the existing system architecture, maintaining control over it, and implementing new innovations—while ensuring the technology systems can evolve and remain secure as the company scales.

Keys to the fit:
The CTO must have recent hands-on experience in the auction space or a company delivering mission-critical software similar to an auction platform (requiring performance, redundancy, security, and resiliency). The right candidate has deep cloud and architecture experience and is in the trenches now and ready to move up. Perhaps a current VP or Director of Engineering with leadership experience (or proven leadership potential) who is looking to step up to CTO and take on broader technology and operations responsibilities.

In addition:

  • The CTO will be a “five-tool player” who relishes strategic and tactical oversight of full stack SW Development (front and back end) experience, IT/Tech Ops, product management, and design (UI, UX)
  • Deep experience w/ modern Cloud (Azure/AWS/Other) environments (ideally at scale)
  • Current or recent hands-on coder with experience and enthusiasm for overseeing complex architecture
  • Expert w/ tech stack (see BigIron platform schematic) and data sets of similar complexity and scale including Mobile (native and mobile web) app development, MS development platform, NetSuite, Stripe, Twilio, SendGrid, Google Analytics,
  • EDA Data, and integrating real-time auctions, Online Marketing, AvaTax, payment systems and data sets of similar complexity and scale
  • Experience at design of cloud-based solutions and making architecture level evaluations and tradeoffs focused on security, robustness, and performance metrics
  • Beyond being a pure technologist, the CTO must bring solid business acumen as BigIron’s platform powers global sales, marketing, and a customer service army of 400 FTEs so the technical operations and support are also part of the CTO’s remit. The CTO must be able to translate business requirements into tech solutions and interact with internal and external commercial types.
  • Significant experience with cloud-based, high transaction volume (ideally e-Commerce or auction) sites and the tech required to ensure they operate without a glitch—a must with 20,000 bids happening a day and a need for real-time communication and collaboration
  • Comfortable managing geographically distributed SW development and IT operational resources (including offshore resources)
  • With an overall team size of 40, the selected CTO will be a strong leader and manager who’s looking for a place to settle in to drive innovation and growth for years to come

Responsibilities:

  • Design and lead the implementation of BigIron’s strategy for technology
  • Standardize the implementations and enforcement of technology and quality across the organization
  • Conduct research to remain up to date regarding industry trends, emerging technologies, and threats
  • Demonstrate leadership and technical hands-on direction for the team while adopting modern technical excellence across the company
  • Continue to build a strong, world-class technical team and technical product development capability, utilizing both employee and contract resources as needed to achieve business objective.
  • Manage all aspects of internal IT, utilizing both employee and contract help desk resources
  • Ensure a positive relationship between IT and internal-facing business areas with timely support of day-to-day business processing needs
  • Efficiently and effectively balance workload between in-house and outsourced resources and manage the ongoing business systems-related projects
  • Drive continuous improvements in the platform in line with changing business needs
  • Oversee documentation of technical requirements as well as their prioritization, development, and deployment in coordination with other departments and in synch with business needs and schedules
  • Analyze business processes; identify alternative solutions, assess feasibility, and recommend new approaches, typically seeking to exploit technology components. Ensure understanding of needs is completed prior to proposing solutions and starting implementation
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management or required by the position

Requirements (the Must-Haves):

  • Significant full stack SW Development (front & back end) experience
  • Current/recent hands-on coder who’s close to (if not still in) the code
  • Deep experience w/ modern Cloud (Azure/AWS/Other) environments (ideally at scale) requiring both the development of new technology and the integration of 3rd party solutions
  • Expert w/ tech stack (see BigIron platform schematic below) and data sets of similar complexity and scale?
  • Experience at design of cloud-based solutions and making architecture level evaluations and tradeoffs focused on security, robustness, and performance metrics
  • Out of companies delivering mission-critical SW requiring performance, redundancy, security, and resiliency
  • Team Leadership experience (or proven potential to lead)
  • Solid business acumen, able to translate business requirements into tech solutions, and interact with internal and external commercial types—beyond a pure technologist?

The Nice-to-Haves:

  • Prefer an Up ‘n Comer to a journeyman who’s keen to stretch, learn, and grow (e.g. add business and operations remit to a pure technology resume)
  • Auction platform experience is a big plus
  • Mobile (native and mobile web) app development experience is preferred
  • In a perfect world, the selected candidate will have previously been a Software Architect
  • Management of dispersed SW Development & IT Ops teams including offshore resources
  • Affinity for BigIron’s constituencies (agriculture, rural, construction, middle America)
  • Significant experience planning and deploying technology in support of cybersecurity, and system and data recovery in support of business continuity
  • Experience managing distributed dev. resources, including working in an onshore/offshore model.
  • Experience developing and managing budgets and hiring, training, and developing team members
